About AM Consults
A Kampala practice, building for Uganda.
We are architects, interior designers and project managers working from one studio in Nakasero. Since 2009 we have delivered houses, offices, apartments, schools and hospital buildings across the country.
Our story
AM Consults opened in 2009 with two architects, one commission and a view that most of what was being built in Kampala was being designed for somewhere else. Imported plans, sealed facades, glass on the west elevation, air conditioning doing work that a roof overhang should have done for free.
Sixteen years on, the practice has grown to eighteen people and the view has not changed. We still believe that a building in Uganda should be designed for Uganda: for two rainy seasons, an equatorial sun path, a highland climate that gives you cool nights, a supply chain that is short on some things and rich in others, and clients who will live with the running costs for decades.
What we work on
Roughly half our work is residential — private houses and apartment developments. A quarter is commercial: offices, hotels, mixed-use. The rest is institutional, which is the work we are proudest of: schools, a university innovation building, and a maternal and child health wing currently on site in Mbarara.
How we are set up
Architecture, interior design and project management sit in the same studio. That is deliberate. The most expensive problems on a building project are not design failures — they are handover failures, between disciplines and between stages. Keeping the team together removes most of them.
We would rather tell a client in week two that their budget will not carry their brief than discover it together in month nine.
Registered practice
All architectural submissions are made by architects registered with the relevant Ugandan professional boards. Structural drawings are issued under the seal of a registered engineer.

What we hold to
Not a mission statement. These are the arguments we are willing to have with a client, a contractor or each other.
Context first
Slope, sun path, prevailing wind, neighbours, the road, the water table. We resolve the site before we resolve the style — because the site is the part you cannot change.
Design for this climate
Kampala sits on the equator at 1,200 metres. That is a specific set of conditions, and it rewards specific answers: deep eaves, cross-ventilation, thermal mass, controlled east and west glazing.
Detail properly
Buildings here fail at the roof edge, at the ground, and at the junction between them. We draw those junctions at 1:5 and we inspect them on site.
One accountable team
Architecture, interiors and project management under one roof. When something needs resolving between disciplines, there is no gap to fall into.
Say the hard thing early
If a budget will not carry a brief, or a site will not carry a scheme, you hear it in week two — not in month nine when it is expensive.
Build local
Kajjansi brick, Karamoja granite, mvule and eucalyptus, locally pressed blocks. Short supply chains, materials that age well here, and money that stays in the economy.

2009
The practice opens
Founded in Kampala with two architects and a single residential commission in Muyenga.
2013
First institutional commission
A primary school block in Wakiso — the beginning of a body of education and health work that continues today.
2017
Project management added
Clients kept asking us to stay on through construction. We built the team to do it properly rather than informally.
2020
BIM across every project
Full transition to model-based delivery, which cut coordination errors and made visualisation a by-product rather than an extra.
2023
Kololo Summit completes
Our first high-rise: twelve storeys, a naturally ventilated atrium, and a 31% reduction in cooling energy.
Today
Four regions, one studio
Working from Kampala across Central, Eastern, Western and Northern Uganda — still with the same approach.
